The Masonic Lodge
In June, 1885, the Grand Lodge of Wisconsin in Milwaukee granted a charter to Howarth Lodge No. 228. It was named after a prominent Masonic brother from Mazomanie. In March 1993, the name was changed to Mt. Horeb Lodge 228. After moving several times, the lodge was located on the second floor of the Opera House building.
In 1974, the Lodge assisted the Grand Lodge of Wisconsin in raising $1.5 million for a diagnostic and treatment center in Milwaukee, an institution to help people in all walks of life.
In 1984, members voted to contribute the funds that had accumulated towards ownership of a building to establish a scholarship fund for Mt. Horeb high school seniors. The purpose was to assist in the continual building of a better and greater America through scholars. Four seniors, two boys and two girls receive cash awards of $200 each year. In 1984, 100 years after the Lodge was instituted, attendance at meetings fell off, and this led to consolidation with Verona Lodge No. 294, Verona WI.
